Learn to understand the ocean before entering the water<\/span><\/h5>

One of the biggest differences between someone just starting out and someone who has been surfing for a while is not only technique, but also the ability to read the ocean.<\/span><\/p>

Knowing how to interpret waves, wind, and currents can completely transform your surfing experience. More than just catching waves, it\u2019s about being in the right place at the right time \u2014 and staying safe.<\/span><\/p>

We believe that learning to read the ocean is one of the first steps to progressing consistently.<\/span><\/p>

What does \u201creading the ocean\u201d mean?<\/span><\/h5>

Reading the ocean is the ability to observe and understand its behavior before and during a surf session.<\/span><\/p>

It includes noticing:<\/strong><\/p>

  • Where waves are breaking<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  • How they are forming<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  • Which areas are safer to enter and exit<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  • Where the best position is to catch waves<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    Instead of entering the water \u201cblindly,\u201d you start making decisions based on what you see.<\/span><\/p>

    1. Observe before entering<\/span><\/h5>

    Before grabbing your board, take a few minutes to watch the ocean.<\/span><\/p>

    Ask yourself:<\/strong><\/p>

    • Are the waves breaking in the same spot or do they vary?<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • Are there sets (groups of larger waves)?<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • Notice where the wave first rises<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • Observe where the foam starts<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • See where more experienced surfers are positioned<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

        Important: the peak can change constantly, especially on sandy bottoms, so don\u2019t stay in the same spot if conditions change.<\/span><\/p>

        3. Understand currents<\/span><\/h5>

        Currents are water movements that can help your session.<\/span><\/p>
